![]() The “make up gain” can boost the loudness of our audio so it’s appropriate for the project. It can smooth out performances which might have a bit too much volume variance (a wide dynamic range).Used judiciously, Compression can solve several problems for us: Multiple passes through dynamics tools is generally a bad idea.Until we hit the Threshold, nothing actually happens. Compression is activated when your audio reaches a “Threshold” level – a triggering amount of volume. In my last post I talked about two key ideas: What do we want a compressor to do in the VO studio? But it’s important to have that conversation. It’s also possible that your client may have no idea what you are talking about. Some clients will want to handle that themselves, while others may expect you do it. If we are delivering final work to a client project, best practice is to confirm that applying compression is OK with them. If another person will be processing your audio further in the workflow, using compression can seriously impact what they might be able to do later on. Before we start applying them, it’s worth asking our client if it’s even necessary at all. Last week I went over the controls found on most Compressor plugins that we’re likely to encounter. That’s a nerdy way of saying “…when you start to lean on a long crowbar – it doesn’t take too much pressure to start breaking things.” In my voiceover recording classes, I talk about Compression as a “tool of high leverage”. With Compression, it’s easy to fall into that trap. Do we hear the processing rather than the performance? That’s a good indicator that we may be doing to much. When we use a Compression effect on our audition, it’s important to ask whether that effect might be overwhelming the performance. TDR Kotelnikov is available for free download via Tokyo Dawn Labs (9.7 MB download size, ZIP archive, 32-bit & 64-bit VST/AU/AAX plugin format for Windows & Mac).Compressors can be cryptic, but once we wrangle the settings, they can provide useful control to our voiceover recordings. Thanks for the support guys! And of course, thanks to Tokyo Dawn Labs for yet another powerful freeware tool! It’s amazing how many fantastic free effects and instruments we have at our disposal these days. I’d like to thank BPB readers K and Drew Lake for letting me know about the new release. That’s always a nice move from a developer! I usually like to avoid installers, unless they’re absolutely necessary for the plugin to work properly. It’s also worth noting that you can choose to download the portable version of the plugin (just a ZIP archive containing the DLL file) if you don’t like using the installer. It’s a fully functional mastering tool and the alternative version of the plugin simply adds some new features. Please note that the free version of the plugin is not limited in any way. ![]() The alternative Gentleman’s Edition of the plugin (labeled TDR Kotelnikov GE) is priced at €40 and it adds several improvements to the standard feature set. The basic version of TDR Kotelnikov is completely free to download and use. The plugin is available in two different flavors. UPDATE: TDR Kotelnikov is one of the top picks in our free music production software article! ![]() In my opinion, it’s safe to say that TDR Kotelnikov is the most transparent mastering compressor on the freeware market (and beyond)! It is “proudly digital” in the sense that it doesn’t color the processed audio signal even when pushed to the extreme settings. TDR Kotelnikov is a stealthy compressor VST plugin designed for use on the master bus. The plugin comes from Tokyo Dawn Labs, a team of developers behind the absolutely brilliant TDR Feedback Compressor.Ĭoming from the guys who brought us TDR Feedback Compressor, my expectations for this new mastering compressor are very high.
